The brilliant director Robert Wiene created 1920 with this film an expressionist masterpiece, one of the first horror films with long-term effect. Together with live music from the grand piano, played by pianist Jens Schlichting, the evening is sure to be a similarly acclaimed experience as are the previous evenings with Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin. . . Danger for late arrivals: the evenings were sold out so far fast.
Jens Schlichting has created a fan base with his Bayreuth appearances in recent years – his performances as a silent film pianist are legendary: virtuoso improvising, to the point (or sometimes mischievously) with fragments of Chopin quoted to Wagner and playing with the necessary expressionistic verve, after everyone wants a big silent film.
